Phase 1 – Foundation
Target Audience
- Java developers familiar with Lambdas
- Developers aiming to write clean, readable Java 8 code
- Anyone preparing for Streams and real-world Java 8 usage
1. Objective of This Module
By the end of this module, you will:
- Understand what Method References are
- Know different types of Method References
- Decide when to use Lambda vs Method Reference
- Write more readable and expressive Java 8 code
2. What Is a Method Reference?
A Method Reference is a shorthand notation of a Lambda expression when the Lambda only calls an existing method.
Think of it as:
“Use this existing method here”
3. Why Method References Exist
Consider this Lambda:
list.forEach(item -> System.out.println(item));
The Lambda only calls a method. Java 8 allows us to simplify this:
list.forEach(System.out::println);
✔ Less code
✔ Better readability
✔ Clear intent
4. Syntax of Method References
ClassName::methodName
or
objectReference::methodName
5. Types of Method References
Java 8 supports four types of Method References.
5.1 Static Method Reference
Function<String, Integer> converter = Integer::parseInt;
Equivalent Lambda:
Function<String, Integer> converter = s -> Integer.parseInt(s);
5.2 Instance Method of a Particular Object
Printer printer = new Printer();
Consumer<String> print = printer::print;
Equivalent Lambda:
Consumer<String> print = s -> printer.print(s);
5.3 Instance Method of an Arbitrary Object of a Class
List<String> names = List.of("a", "b", "c");
names.forEach(String::toUpperCase);
Equivalent Lambda:
names.forEach(s -> s.toUpperCase());
5.4 Constructor Reference
Supplier<List<String>> listSupplier = ArrayList::new;
Equivalent Lambda:
Supplier<List<String>> listSupplier = () -> new ArrayList<>();
6. Lambda vs Method Reference
| Aspect | Lambda | Method Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | More | Less |
| Readability | Good | Better (when simple) |
| Debugging | Easier | Slightly harder |
| Use case | Custom logic | Existing method |
Rule of Thumb:
👉 If Lambda only calls one method → use Method Reference
7. Code Readability Rules (Very Important)
- Prefer clarity over cleverness
- Don’t force method references everywhere
- Avoid long chains that reduce readability
- Streams + method references should read like English
Bad:
data.stream().map(x -> x.getA().getB().getC()).forEach(...);
Better:
data.stream()
.map(Data::getA)
.map(A::getB)
.map(B::getC)
.forEach(...);
8. Real-World Usage Examples
System.out::printlnString::valueOfObjects::nonNullCollections::sort- Constructor references in factories
9. Hands-On Exercises
Exercise 1
Replace Lambdas with Method References where possible.
Exercise 2
Convert constructor Lambdas to constructor references.
Exercise 3
Refactor a messy Stream pipeline to improve readability.
10. Common Mistakes
- Using method references blindly
- Sacrificing readability
- Making debugging harder with over-composition
11. Summary
- Method References are syntax sugar
- They improve readability when used correctly
- Not a replacement for all Lambdas
